California Botanic Garden to hold Family Bird Festival in Claremont

The California Botanic Garden in Claremont will celebrate birds and their connection­s to native plant ecosystems at its Family Bird Festival, to be held 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Feb. 18.

The California Botanic Garden is partnering with Pomona Valley Audubon Society to fill the garden with interactiv­e educationa­l activities, crafts and informatio­n booths that will teach visitors about birding, bird habitats, birds frequently seen in Southern California, bird anatomy and adaptation and more.

There will also be booths from guests including Internatio­nal Bird Rescue, the Alf Museum of Paleontolo­gy, Cal Poly Pomona Urban Wildlife Lab, San Dimas Canyon Nature Center and California Condors Wild and Free, as well as live birds from a local rescue organizati­on, according to a news release.

Great Backyard Bird Count participan­ts can visit multiple stations throughout the garden to contribute to the California Botanic Garden’s count, and there will be food trucks at the event.

Admission to the Family Bird Festival is free with admission to the California Botanic Garden, which is free for members. For nonmembers, California Botanic Garden admission is $10 for adults, $6 for students with ID and seniors 65 and older, $4 for children ages 3 to 12 and free for children younger than 3.

The day of the Family Bird Festival, the garden’s regular hours are 8 a.m.-5 p.m., and the Grow Native Nursery hours are 10 a.m.-4 p.m.

The California Botanic Garden, at 1500 N. College Ave., Claremont, is spread across 86 acres and has curated collection­s of more than 22,000 California native plants, some of which are rare or endangered, according to the news release.
