UCLA wins at Stanford; USC loses in OT in Collier's return

Sebastian Mack scored 21 points, Adem Bona had 16 points and eight rebounds, and UCLA beat Stanford 82-74 late on Wednesday night for its fourth straight victory.

UCLA made a steal under the Stanford basket with just under two minutes remaining and Bona made a shot in the lane at the other end for a 74-67 lead.

Stanford forward Maxime Raynaud made just 1 of 4 free-throw attempts in a 40-second span with under two minutes remaining. The Bruins sealed it by making eight straight free throws in the final 40 seconds.

UCLA went 23 of 30 from the free-throw line compared to Stanford’s 17 attempts.

Will Mcclendon scored a career-high 13 points and Dylan Andrews also scored 13 for UCLA (12-11, 7-5 Pac12).

Mack scored 12 points in the first half to help UCLA take a 35-33 lead into the intermissi­on. Stanford shot 52% from the field but turned it over eight times. Five of UCLA’S 12 field goals were from 3-point range.

The Bruins, who entered 32% from 3-point range, went 11 of 25 from distance. UCLA’S 10th 3-pointer came with 8:54 remaining for a 57-53 lead.

Raynaud had 20 points and 10 rebounds for Stanford (11-11, 6-6).

Next up, UCLA at Cal and Stanford plays host to USC on Saturday.

Isaiah Collier had an impressive return to the Trojans’ lineup but wasn’t able to rescue the visitors in the Pac-12 loss at Berkeley.

Jaylon Tyson had 27 points, Jalen Celestine had six of his 11 points in overtime for Cal, which wasted

CAL 83, USC 77, OT >> a 16-point lead in the second half.

Celestine made a tiebreakin­g 3-pointer for a 7572 lead with 1 1/2 minutes left in overtime and then made three free throws in the last 24 seconds. The Trojans missed their last three shots, including Fardaws Aimaq’s block on Collier with 27 seconds left and the Bears up 80-77.

Keonte Kennedy made two free throws with 32 seconds left as Cal made 8 of 10 from the line in OT (14 of 16 in the game).

Jalen Cone had 20 points as Cal (10-13, 6-6) snapped an 11-game losing streak in the series.

Collier, the star freshman who missed six games because of a hand injury, had 20 points, all after halftime, for USC (9-14, 3-9).

Collier was 4 of 13 from the field but 12 of 16 from the line. He had 14 points in the last 7 1/2 minutes of regulation, taking over when the deficit was 58-47. He made one of two from the line to tie the score at 67-67 with 27 seconds left in regulation, forcing overtime.

DJ Rodman added 17 points for USC with his third 3 pulling the Trojans within 78-77 with 36 seconds left in OT.

The Inland area’s two D-I men’s basketball teams are both in action tonight in Riverside. CBU (13-8, 6-4 in the WAC) plays host to UT Arlington (11-11, 6-5) while across town UC Riverside (8-15, 3-8 Big West) plays host to CS Bakersfiel­d (913, 4-7). Both games tip at 7 p.m.

Aaliyah Edwards had 18 points and 15 rebounds as No. 11 Uconn gave head coach Geno Auriemma his 1,200th career victory Wednesday, routing Seton Hall 67-34.

Freshman Ashlynn Shade made five 3-pointers and scored 17 points and Paige Bueckers had 13 for Uconn (20-4, 12-0 Big East), which reached 20 wins for the 31st consecutiv­e season.

Krzyzewski (1,202) and Stanford’s Tara Vanderveer (1,206) as the only coaches in Division I history with 1,200 wins.

Dalton Knecht had 27 points, seven rebounds and six assists to lead the Vols at Knoxville. Zakai Zeigler had 17 points, nine assists and five steals for Tennessee (17-5, 7-2 SEC).

Mark Mitchell and Caleb Foster scored 13 points apiece and freshman Jared Mccain (Centennial HS) added 11 as the Blue Devils (17-5, 8-3 ACC) won in Durham, N.C.

Markus Burton had 19 points for Notre Dame (716, 2-10), which has had tough first season under coach Micah Shrewsberr­y.

Dug Mcdaniel scored 16 points, including three free throws in the final 19 seconds, as the Wolverines (8-15, 3-9) pulled off the upset in Ann Arbor. AJ Storr scored 20 points for the Badgers (16-7, 8-4), who have lost a season-high three consecutiv­e games.
