Clippers, Lakers stand pat at trade deadline

-

From staff and wire reports

While the Clippers and Lakers stood pat at the trade deadline, there was plenty of movement around the league.

Bojan Bogdanovic left Detroit to join a now even-more-formidable contender in New York. Gordon Hayward is leaving Charlotte for one of the league’s best surprise stories this season in Oklahoma City. Doug Mcdermott was once traded by Indiana to San Antonio, and now, the Spurs have traded him back to the Pacers.

None of those shooters were making playoff plans when Thursday started.

Trade deadline day in the NBA gave them and plenty of other players an entirely new outlook, plus may have even reshaped the start of the playoff push as well.

The Knicks made some big moves with eyes on contending in the Eastern Conference, Philadelphia added a sharpshooter in Buddy Hield with hopes that it can get back on track when — or if — reigning MVP Joel Embiid returns from injury, while Phoenix and Dallas added frontcourt depth. The Suns landed Royce O’neale from Brooklyn and the Mavericks are bringing in P.J. Washington from Charlotte.

Hield left Indiana in a trade to the 76ers, and the Pacers seemed to try and replace his shooting by bringing back Mcdermott in a move with San Antonio. Mcdermott spent three seasons, 2018 through 2021, with Indiana, so the trade was a homecoming of sorts.

Another homecoming: Kelly Olynyk is headed back to his native Canada, the veteran forward getting acquired by Toronto in a deal with Utah.

Milwaukee made a couple of notable moves, one by landing Patrick Beverley from the 76ers and pairing him with Bucks guard Damian Lillard; those two exchanged some heated words during last season’s playoffs. The Bucks then sent center Robin Lopez to Sacramento; it is expected that Lopez will be waived by the Kings.

■ Among teams standing pat was Cleveland, which has won 15 of its last 16 to move to No. 2 in the East. The Cavs beat Washington, 114-106 with Donovan Mitchell scoring 40 and former Rancho Christian High and USC standout Evan Mobley getting 22 points (on 9-of-10 shooting) and eight rebounds. During the team’s winning streak and in his limited time back from knee surgery, the 6-11 Mobley has also had a game with 28 points and 10 rebounds, and another with 11 points, 14 rebounds and seven assists.

■ Washington Mystics star Elena Delle Donne is stepping away from basketball, potentially for the entire season, a person familiar with the decision said Thursday. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because no official announcement had been made.

The two-time MVP, designated as a core player by the Mystics before free agency began last week, has been at an impasse regarding her contract. The core designation guaranteed her the WNBA’S maximum of $241,98.

Del Solar shoots Korn Ferry Tour record 57 in Bogota

Cristobal Del Solar of Chile set the Korn Ferry Tour record on Thursday with a 13-under 57 in the Astara Golf Championship in Bogota, Colombia, shooting the lowest round in a PGA Tour-sanctioned event and matching the record on tours that are part of the Official World Golf ranking.

Del Solar, 30, who played college golf at Florida State, was so flawless that he made par on his final three holes and still shot a 57.

He made two eagles, one of them on the 330-yard ninth hole to go out in 8-under 27, tying the Korn Ferry Tour record for nine holes. The Pacos course is 6,254 yards at some 8,500 feet of elevation.

Del Solar broke the previous Korn Ferry record of 58 held by Stephan Jaeger from the first round of the Ellie Mae Classic in 2016.

Chargers hire veteran offensive coordintor Roman

Jim Harbaugh is bringing in Greg Roman to direct the Chargers’ offense, the team announced Thursday.

Roman was Harbaugh’s offensive coordinator during his four-year tenure with the San Francisco 49ers and was associate head coach under Harbaugh at Stanford in 2009 and ‘10.

Roman was offensive coordinator of the Baltimore Ravens under Jim’s brother, John, from 2019-22. He was out of the league this season.

Brady comes to the Bolts after spending this past season as a senior offensive assistant with the Philadelphia Eagles. Prior to that, Brady had a five-year stint in Indianapolis, including the 2021 and ‘22 seasons as offensive coordinator.

Rangers sign ALCS MVP Garcia, avoid arbitration

Adolis García and the Texas Rangers agreed Thursday to a $14 million, two-year contract, avoiding a salary arbitration hearing between the AL Championship Series MVP and the World Series champions.

García, a two-time All-star slugger who set an MLB postseason record with 22 RBIS last fall, was eligible for arbitration for the first time. He had requested $6.9 million and Texas had offered $5 million.

■ Utilityman J.D. Davis became the seventh straight player to win in salary arbitration, beating the San Francisco Giants on Thursday and getting a raise from $4.21 million to $6.9 million rather than the team’s $6.55 million offer. Players lead teams 7-2 with eight cases pending.

Metal from Eiffel Tower added into `24 Paris Games medals

Athletes who win Olympic and Paralympic medals at the Paris Games will be taking home a bit of the French capital’s most famous landmark. Metal from beams and girders that have been swapped out of the iconic Eiffel Tower down the years has been stored, chopped up, polished and inserted in the heart of each of the nearly 5,100 medals that will be handed out at the Olympics from July 26-Aug. 11 and the Paralympics that follow.

■ Michigan athletic director Warde Manuel will be chairman of the College Football Playoff selection committee next season, the CFP announced. Manuel has served on the committee for the past two years, staying on throughout last season when Michigan was contending for a playoff spot while also being investigated by the NCAA. Michigan made the playoff and went on to win the national title. Selection committee members are recused from being part of discussions about teams they have a professional association with.
