San Diego State rolls past Yale and sets up title game rematch

Jaedon Ledee had 26 points and nine rebounds, Darrion Trammell added 18 points and fifth-seeded San Diego State used a fast start to overwhelm 13thseeded Yale and rolled to an 8557 win in the second round of the NCAA Tournament late on Sunday night in Spokane.

The Aztecs scored the first 10 points of the game, led by 24 at halftime and rolled into a second consecutiv­e Sweet 16.

San Diego State (26-10) earned a rematch with No. 1 seed and defending national champion Uconn on Thursday in Boston. The Huskies beat the Aztecs 7659 last April in Houston, denying San Diego State a chance at its first title.

Ledee. who scored 32 points in the first-round win over UAB, made 9 of 12 shots, including a pair of 3s, and in two tournament games is 20-for-30 shooting.

But some of the outside shooting that was absent in the tourney opener returned and San Diego State made a season-high 13 3-pointers. Trammell hit four 3s against Yale.

Bez Mbeng had 12 points to lead Yale (23-10).

Donovan Clingan, Tristen Newton and the top overall seeded Huskies overwhelme­d an undermanne­d Wildcats team on Sunday night in Brooklyn.

Newton had 20 points and 10 assists, and Clingan finished with 14 points, 14 rebounds and eight blocks as Uconn (33-3) led wireto-wire and became the first defending national champion to reach a regional semifinal since Duke in 2016.

Connecticu­t built a 30-point cushion and matched a program record for wins set by the 201314 national championsh­ip squad.

South Region

HOUSTON 100, TEXAS A&M 94, OT >>

Emanuel Sharp scored 30 points and started overtime with a 3-pointer that put the top-seeded Cougars ahead to stay Sunday night in Memphis.

Houston (32-4) advanced to play Duke in a Sweet 16 matchup Friday night in Dallas.

The Aggies forced overtime with a furious rally, outscoring Houston 17-5 in the final two minutes of regulation. Andersson Garcia beat the buzzer with his ninth 3-pointer of the season.

The win by Houston means all eight teams seeded 1 and 2 advanced to the Sweet 16 for the fifth time since the NCAA tourney started seeding in 1979. The top eight seeds also advanced in 2019, 2009, 1995 and 1989.

West Region

Chase Hunter had 20 points and six assists, and the No. 6-seeded Tigers knocked out the No. 3 Bears in Memphis.

Clemson (23-11) advanced to play No. 2-seeded Arizona on Thursday at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles.

Mark Sears had 26 points and 12 rebounds, Mouhamed Dioubate scored all nine of his points in the final 5 1/2 minutes, and the fourth-seeded Crimson Tide used a late surge to slip past the No. 12-seeded Antelopes in Spokane.

Alabama (23-11), which advanced to the Sweet 16 for the third time in the last four seasons, will play top-seeded North Carolina on Thursday in Los Angeles.

Tyon Grant-foster scored 29 points for Grand Canyon (31-4).
