Sustainable partnership powers ferries
Partnership with trusted experts is the key to effective electrification
Energising The Future
Electrification is increasing vessel efficiency, sustainability and productivity. Low noise operations are dramatically improving vessel experiences for crew, passengers, bystanders and wildlife. But when it comes to the complex talk of integrating batteries, electric motors and multiple power-sources in a vessel, there is no ‘one size fits all’ approach. Trust and confidence in integration partners is what’s ultimately driving the marine industry’s electric revolution. That is where HamiltonJet comes in.
Planet-Friendly Partnerships
HamiltonJet has teamed up with Auckland Transport, Fullers Ferries, Q-West and Incat Crowther to create a 34m Series Hybrid Commuter Ferry for the Auckland harbour region, with the primary goals of reducing carbon emissions and maximising the electric-only operation on as many routes as possible. The vessel, currently in build and destined to hit the water in 2025, is powered by EHX (ElectroHybrid Drive system).
EHX offers all the advantages of electric drive with the full capabilities of diesel. This unique system delivers lower fossil fuel consumption combined with the speed, manoeuvrability, efficiency and safety of waterjets.
Seamless Integration
Alongside our usual waterjets and vessel controls, HamiltonJet will deliver the electric motors, generators, DC power electronics, batteries, MCS on-vessel shore charging integration, power-management system energy usage analysis and seamless mode transitions for at least 2 vessels. HamiltonJet are the lead hybrid-system integrator on this complex project, leveraging our longstanding expertise of driveline integration (engines, gearboxes and jets).
Our EHX control system manages the hybrid energy flow between engines, batteries and motors while charging and discharging the batteries as required. A simple automatic setting enables effortless vessel operation in a manner, similar to driving a hybrid car, whilst manual mode allows a more tailored approach. This flexible system can be custom configured to operate series-hybrid, parallel-hybrid or allelectric vessels.
Leading The Way
HamiltonJet has more than 70 years’ experience in the industry. We are trusted the world over for our expertise and represent the latest in efficient, robust, high performance propulsion technology. We are excited for this latest opportunity to deliver best in class innovation with benefits for people and planet.
