Diane Morgan
California, USA, Jumble Bee, oil, 30 x 24" (76 x 61 cm)
My Inspiration
I paint bees to help save bees…to bring attention to the colony collapse crisis. I want to make the bee crisis a prominent issue, to create interest in solving the problem. Without bees we will lose many of our food crops. I was appalled to learn that one-third of bee colonies were dying and that onethird of our food needs bees for pollination. If bees continue to die at the current rate, there will be no bees in 25 years. While out photographing flowers, I saw this bee and knew that I had to paint it. Intrigued by the colors and shapes, I loved the jumble and chaos of the center of the flower surrounding the bee.
My Design Strategy
I envision a painting in almost everything I see. Adding drama and mystery through the use of powerful lighting effects, exaggerated contrasts and unusual compositions, I strive to transform simple everyday life into un-ordinary, not-so-still life. I like to take an ordinary subject and enhance the perception of it, invite the viewer to take a closer look. If you look closer, you may discover something new about yourself. I love how the medium takes command. The artist starts the process, but the paint takes charge and leads the work to a sometimes unintended outcome. It’s always exhilarating.
My Working Process
I work in oil, but always start my paintings with a coat of orange gesso first. I love how the orange adds a glow that shines through the layers of paint no matter the final color. After the gesso, I draw the image on the canvas with white charcoal pencil. It easily wipes off, or blends with the paint so the lines disappear. I work with water miscible oils and love being able to thin the paint with water instead of hazardous chemicals. I apply many layers of paint for subtle color variations. Working from dark to light, I keep layers thin so there is no texture. The eye travels more easily into the painting without texture stopping it.
