ABOUT THE ARTIST

-

Suzy Smith is a Wyoming native, who has lived in Albuquerque, New Mexico, for the past 20 years. She started her career learning to draw at the local community college in her hometown of Casper, Wyoming, and then taught herself to paint.

“I always knew I wanted to be an artist, and was determined to let nothing stop me,” she says. “Even though I was married and had my children when I was 18 and 21, I would drive through a blizzard at night to attend drawing classes, so my husband could babysit.”

Smith started painting watercolor still life and florals, and about 20 years ago, she began also painting in oil, adding figures a few years later. Smith was influenced by the great pin-up artists such as Alberto Vargas, and Gil Elvgrin, as well as the pop art of the same period, by the likes of Wayne Thiebaud, Andy Warhol and Robert Indiana. She decided the two would make a perfect pairing; a female nude with an iconic painting in the background. She then adds a whimsical title, often using a double entendre, as pop art is known for tongue in cheek humor and irony. Her paintings invoke a style that is an accurate assessment of an era, while remaining current today.

Smith has exhibited her work internationally, and her paintings are included in many private and public collections that include: the Museo Internacional de Arte, the Nicolaysen Art Museum, the Howard Tullman collection, the Dryer’s Grand Ice Cream Corporate Art Collection and the Kaiser Foundation Art Collection. Smith paints in oil and watercolor, painting female figurative work as well as still life and florals. She is a signature member of the National Watercolor Society, and her work can be seen at RJD Gallery, in Bridgehampton, New York; Abend Gallery in Denver, Colorado; as well as her studio in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
