TIP:

While it is not imperative, I highly recommend that you tone your canvas rather than working on a white surface. It can be hard to gauge any values off a white surface, because every other color appears darker than the surface, which is the lightest color. (The same thing happens if you work on a black surface; every color you apply appears light in contrast.)
