Escha van den Bogerd’s paintings blend artwork of the Old Masters with her contemporary aesthetic

acrylic on canvas, 120 x 105 cm

Degas has created so many beautiful ballet artworks, so it was a simple choice to put a beautiful ballerina in front of this painting. She is so inspired by this artwork that time has stood still. It is as if she has stepped out of one of Degas paintings herself. The blue in her dress has a lovely contrast with the green background making it serene and fairytale like.

Holland’s most beloved girl hangs in my hometown of The Hague. This painting even has a movie made after it. It’s small, but so inspiring, and her eyes have such depth and story to them. To me the girl looking at her portrays a modern version of what she would have looked like today. The acrylic blend of the background is somewhat abstract to make the realistic painting stand out more. The gold of the frame is shining bright on the green background and the yellow of the blouse complements the total effect and mood if this artwork.

acrylic on canvas, 130 x 100 cm In this work I was trying to capture the world’s most famous painting and yet not make the watchers take up too much space, as this is a smaller painting in real life. The choice of two small girls that sneaked over the barrier in The Louvre seemed the perfect choice as the

herself has a somewat cheeky expression on her face that we all but wonder about. It’s a perfect combination of playfulness and color. acrylic on canvas, 140 x 100 cm

I like to create a very large painting to draw the audience into the real mood of the painting and give them the feeling of being present in the museum. As mentioned before, I think Van Gogh has a childlike feeling about his mind and artworks. The brushstrokes and colors suit these two young girls looking at this world-famous artwork. The red in the dress and the yellow in the sunflowers make a perfect contrast that keeps the positive vibe of this artwork.
