My Inspiration
This painting is one of a series called Hidden Secrets, which I created last year after having moved into a new studio and found some old, unfinished paintings that haven’t been touched for years. I first thought I would cover them with a layer of paint, which would work as an underpainting for new works. However, I soon discovered that I really liked the effects of the random colour patches covering (sometimes only partly) the original painting and decided to continue developing the paintings in that direction. Thanks to my friend and fellow artist I also fell in love with gold leaf at that time and wanted to use it to give the paintings yet another dimension.
My Design Strategy
Unlike in portraiture and other representational paintings, I work rather intuitively when creating abstract pieces and I’m often inspired by music, poetry and my inner world. In this case I just had an initial colour combination in mind but the rest of the painting process was unplanned and I let myself get inspired by the shapes and colours I currently saw in the painting, adding new strokes and working until I felt happy with the result.
My Working Process
I picked a combination of colours that expressed my current mood first and covered the old painting with them. Then
I intuitively added various shapes in different colours using brushes as well as a palette knife, and letting some of the paint drip down the canvas as well. I set the painting aside after each layer and looked at it with fresh eyes after a few days. In the end I added gold leaf and turned the painting upside down to see whether the design was well-balanced and it suddenly reminded me of dinosaurs running amongst the giant horsetails and I knew the painting was finished.
