My Inspiration

In 1999 I discovered Splash ink painting and fell in love—it was an epiphany. Splash ink painting relies totally on the chance interplay of water, ink and watercolor on rice paper. It dries in an abstract form; then I let the colors speak to me and add the finishing touches. My pouring acrylic painting evolved from Splash ink painting (Po-mo). Acrylics produce more vibrant color, dry faster and allow me to re-pour sooner. As I became more advanced in acrylic techniques and understood the movement, blending and color mixing, I started to enjoy the acrylic process and end results.

In this painting, Rejoice, the radiant royal colors of gold and red are inspired by Music for the Royal Fireworks, by G. F. Handel.

The painting reflects the burst of energy, jubilant air and celebratory mood in the movement Rejoice.

My Design Strategy

My style of painting is about freedom, creativity, and imagination. It is about finding my inner spirit and letting it work for and through the painting. I like to free my mind first and let the colors lead me to the result. I use five colors—yellow, red, blue, white and black—and occasionally I add metallic pink, blue, gold or silver. I watch carefully how the colors merge and blend. I usually like a bright color against a darker color. If the color mix is not appealing, I let the piece dry and re-pour, using a different shade of color to refine the appearance.

My Working Process

I start with a white or dark base coat over primed canvas. I use Golden High Flow, which is best pouring acrylic, mixed with Floetrol to slow the acrylic from running. I place white color first in the middle of different colors, either in a lines, circles or arcs; I then add other colors—blue, red and yellow. I tilt and shake the canvas gently, letting the colors merge and blend— occasionally I use a spatula or hair dryer to force paint to flow to the side of the canvas. I observe the colors and let the abstract form speak to me.
