My Inspiration

As humans, we live in a world where we balance a fine line between controlling the earth and following the earth’s pace. This affects every action we take as human beings. We brought this upon ourselves: the urge to control and dominate, which can and will not last forever.

The interaction between humans and animals has been my main inspiration to create The Vampire Bat. A moment in which we as humans have to recognize we are not superior.

My Design Strategy

My main goal when forming my design strategy was to show as little human interference with the work as possible. I wanted to create a painting that had almost created itself. The earth, with all its inhabitants, cannot be forced in ways that we as humans sometimes would like. The vampire bat sends this message.

When you look at The Vampire Bat, you can see that most elements show signs of life and movement. The paper feels worn out. Almost as if the painting has endured hundreds of years of human influence. The text “vampire bats only share their blood meals with true friends,” shows us how we resist to stay silent and simply listen.

My Working Process

I wanted to solely use materials that would go their own way once applied. I started off with lettering. This was the only element in the painting that wasn’t allowed any possibility to move. After that I’ve used different layers of paper, some of them almost drowned in paint before applying them. When the different layers were applied, I started moving them around to find the right balance. This was once more an opportunity for the liquids to go any way they could.
