The greatness of love

- By Rev. Dr. Walt Sharer

While preparing a message I looked up the Websters definition of believe, since I frequently refer to belief. The definition that I found most applicable was, “To have confidence in the Truth.” I believe every church, temple, synagogue, or place of worship and celebration is adhering to the truth they understand, but what is the truth and why are there so many different ideas about it? Pilate asked Jesus, “What is the truth? Is your truth my truth?” In 1 John we read, “Anyone that does not love does not know God, for God is Love.” This ultimate Truth actually maintains and sustains our every moment of everyday.

God, being love is at the heart of each individual life. You would think that all religions and creeds would be busy celebrating the gift of free expression by means of love, but unfortunately, they have opted to worship the opposite, which is fear. God gave us life to live the best life we can; to love one another and assist each other where possible. We are to live each moment fully. They have created elaborate schemes about death and dying that go way beyond reason and plausibility. I for one refuse to go to a meeting where I am confronted by a selfappointed judge, and condemned by fairy tale evidence, of a crime I did not commit.

To suppose that God or some facsimile is anything but love is beyond my comprehension. Witch doctors, shamans and clergy of all kinds have sown the seeds of fear. One of the seven deadly sins detailed in the Bible has been sowing discord among the brethren. Let us all sow love, which is the strength of

God. Loving is not weakening. By love we overcome diversity. Fear takes away hope and while hope by itself cannot sustain you, it is a good place to start.

Throughout my life I have always believed there was something more than just my own knowledge to trust. At one time my favorite prayer was, “Starlight, Starbright, the first star I see tonight … I often wondered about Jesus and his message. I loved the story of his life, his knowledge, bravery and love of God. He was a wonderful teacher and guide to the people. I questioned my love for his message, contrasted with the fear others were teaching regarding his death and hope for salvation, and I decided to love Jesus for the man he was,

He is a hero of mine …”

Let us turn our places of worship to citadels of love God allows me to make mistakes that I might learn the right way. I am not condemned. Any suffering is self-imposed. Jesus said, “I am come that they might have life, and have it more abundantly.” Let us celebrate his life by loving.

God is Love and Loving You Right Now!
