City offers water conservati­on rebate program

Incentives provided as drought continues

The severe drought has made it important to save water. To help residents save water in their homes and outside on the lawn, the city of Bishop is part of a rebate program that can help homeowners reduce water use, which also can save energy and money.

City of Bishop water customers may be eligible for substantia­l rebates when replacing old inefficien­t devices and appliances with water-saving devices and Energy Star appliances in a home or business. People may also be eligible for free water-saving irrigation devices. The city web page contains details on products eligible for rebates and how to apply.

Here are some of the products in the rebate program.

High-Efficiency Clothes Washer -- Up to $100 Rebate

The average American family washes about 300 loads of laundry each year. Energy Star can help families cut their related energy and water costs. Energy Star certified clothes washers use about 25% less energy and 40% less water than regular washers.

High Efficiency Toilet (Including Dual-Flush) -Up to $100 Rebate

High-Efficiency Toilets (HETs) are defined as fixtures that flush at 20 percent below the 1.6-gallonsper-flush (gpf) U.S. maximum or less, equating to a maximum of 1.28-gpf.

(The HET category includes dual-flush toilets). The average water savings for HETs is estimated to be 38 gallons per day (gpd) when replacing a non-ULET and 7 gpd when replacing a ULET.

High Efficiency Dishwasher -- Up to $100 Rebate

A dishwasher built before 1994 wastes more than 10 gallons of water per cycle. A new, Energy Star certified dishwasher will save, on average,

1,600 gallons of water over its lifetime.

Free Items -- Irrigation and Car Washing Improvemen­ts (limit one per customer)

Automatic shut off nozzles, hose timers, automatic sprinkler times, and

sprinkler systems can save a lot of water outside. a running hose discharges up to 10 gallons per minute. Use a hose nozzle or turn off the water while you wash your car and you’ll save up to 100 galstate lons every time. Use a garden hose timer when watering by a hose sprinkler. Upgrade to a smart irrigation controller and save 100s of gallons per day.

This is probably the most effective single measession sure a Bishop water customer can take to conserve water.
