Varsity mathletes show their determination in Rosamond
Bishop takes second place in fourth meet
Bishop Union High School varsity mathletes competed in Rosamond Jan. 18 with all team members taking to the road for the first time this season.
After facing five tough rounds – and one too many circle problems – the Bishop mathletes brought home a secondplace certificate for earning 24 points.
The varsity mathletes nearly doubled their score from the previous meet and completed the difficult, multi-step team problem for 3 points. Sam Wilson was able to earn a second-place ribbon for a earning 8 points individually.
Also competing for the team score was Rose Bracken, Joshua Wilson, Ashley Fitt, and Audrey Cokeley.
During the fourth round, the mathletes were confronted with this very wordy problem:
Two bikers are ¾ of the way through a mile long tunnel when a train traveling at 40 mph outside of the tunnel approaches the bikers head on. The bikers decide to go in opposite directions and each narrowly escapes the tunnel just as the front of the train gets to them. The bikers bike at the same speed. What is the speed of the bikers in mph?
Bishop varsity mathletes are just barely behind Tehachapi High School in the fight to become league champions.
BUHS math teacher and coach DeeDee Buchhols says, “This is such a great group of juniors and seniors! They are still in the running to become league champs, so let’s rally behind them Bishop as they tackle their last two meets!”
The varsity team travels to Lancaster to compete at Desert Christian High School on Feb. 15. The Junior Varsity team’s last meet this season was set for Wednesday at BUHS.
