Bishop High mathletes add up the wins at tourneys
Students master calculation in competition
The Bishop Union High School JV mathletes team traveled to Tehachapi, California, last month to challenge other mathletes teams in a contest of intelligence and mathematics.
When the Broncos left, they had scored second place with 26 points, only four points behind the winning team, and 17 points ahead of the other teams. Tehachapi took first place overall, Silver Valley and Rosamond tied for third, and Desert Christian won fourth.
This was a strong start to the season, and the team was looking forward to other meets with plans on taking home gold.
While at the meet, the JV team had to solve 10 complicated math problems, one of which was:

For individual awards, three of the five Bishop students won a ribbon. Bryce Cokeley scored a solid 9 points, taking home a first-place ribbon. He was the only one out of all the teams to win
first place. Sydney Wilson and Caleb Fitt both won a fourth-place ribbon for their 6 points scored. The other regulars, Teagan Orr and Josef Borow, took home 4 and 1 points respectively.
Also competing with Bishop was Taylor Currie, Kano Graves, Donovan Mondragon, Ben Rowan,
Scarlett Buchholz, Reagan Dermody, Clare Haverstock, and Adan Perez.
“We have 15 JV mathletes this year, six returning sophomores who competed last year, along with nine new mathletes, four sophomores and five freshmen,” Coach DeeDee Buchholz said. “This is one of my biggest teams in history with many new faces to the team. I anticipate a great season filled with laughs, growth and victories. Let’s go Bishop!”
Varsity mathletes During the Bishop Union High School varsity mathletes recent trip to Tehachapi, California, the Broncos competed against multiple other teams in a battle of intellect and mathematical skills.
The team started the year off extremely strong by snatching a victory, ending in first place with 48 total points, only five points away from the total number of points that are possible.
Tehachapi took second place with 35 points, and Silver Valley followed close behind with 34 points, putting them in third place.
While they were competing, the mathletes had to answer 10 difficult questions, with one example being:
Solve log(4x - 3) = 2
But despite these hardships, they pulled through and came out on top.
Each of the varsity students won an individual ribbon for themselves. Alyssa Buchholz, a junior at BUHS, earned a perfect individual score of 10, the only one to do so.
Following close behind her, Samuel Wilson, Audrey Cokeley, and Cooper Beard, all took second place with a tied score of 9. Coming in third was Ashley Fitt, with 8 points total and alternates Jodie Bedore, Ellie Crall, and Hunter Dermody all earned 9 points as well
Also competing for the team were Kate Anderson, Anwyn Benson
Hernandez, Alexander Adkins, Sabrina Elwell and Sydney Norcross.
“This was the highest score of any BUHS mathletes team since I started coaching the teams,” said BUHS varsity mathletes coach DeeDee Buchholz. “Scoring 48/53 is truly unheard of in this league. Congratulations to the mathletes for working so hard and taking home a gigantic victory for
Bishop! I am so darn proud of you all.”
