Independence Civic Club grateful for Fruitcake Festival support

-

The Independence Civic Club could not put on the Fruitcake Festival without lots of help. We spent hours transforming the historic American Legion Hall into the French Revolution, complete with the Bastille and, of course the Palace of Versailles where Marie Antoinette hung out.

We are grateful to the County of Inyo for providing this wonderful and historic venue for the community. The Independence Civic Club values and cares for the American Legion Hall where people can come together in our community in a public space.

Thank you to Superior Court Judge Steven Place, Fifth District Supervisor Matt Kingsley and Independence’s own mail man, Alan Broch, for serving as the fruitcake judges. All three of our judges solemnly performed the assessment of the cakes to the best of their ability.

The results were:

Most Solids: Jim White

Traveled the Farthest: Linda Ellsworth (her fruitcake traveled from Germany)

Oldest: Joelle Renzi – Fruitcake was an MRE from 1970

Judges Award: Rosanne Lampariello

Best of Theme: Annika Foote

Honorable Mention: Nancy Hadlock and Richard Potashin

The cutters were Don Bright, Patrick McLernon and Aaron Cassell. Getting through the fruitcake with the most solids requires a steady hand and a sharp knife.

Ellen Harrison, with helper Elaine Delaney, worked her magic providing a tasty meal for those who wanted to mitigate the effects of too much fruitcake or eggnog.
