Local artists sought for mural project in Bishop

Plans call for new mural for Bishop Police Department

- Register Staff

Altrusa International, Inc. of the Eastern Sierra has been awarded a Grant in Support from the city of Bishop to facilitate the creation of a new mural on the east side of the Bishop Police Department building at 207 W. Line Street.

This project, according to a release from the civic organizations, will create a replacement for the current damaged and deteriorating mural, “A

Dangerous Arrest,” which was completed in 2002 in honor of Bishop Police Officer Richard Perkins. Perkins was killed in 2001, in the line of duty.

The new mural, organizers state, will replace the depiction of a violent event with a narrative more focused on community service. The new mural will honors the memories of two fallen heroes of the Bishop

Police Department – Officer Richard Perkins and Officer Mike Mairs.

Officer Mairs passed in 2016 from a work-related illness.

Altrusa is working with Eastern Sierra Artists and C5 Studios Community Arts Center to administer the selection of an artist to make the new mural a reality.

C5 Studios Directors, Erin Dews and Naomi Hart Johnson, will oversee the project.

According to the local Altrusa chapter, work is scheduled to begin in April, to be completed in June.

Interested artists can find out more about this opportunity and how to apply in the “Get Involved” section of the C5 Studios website www.c5studios. org or by emailing contact@c5studios.org.

C5 Studios Community Arts Center is located at 210 S. Warren Street, Bishop, CA 93514.

The center is open Tuesday through Friday, from 10:30 a.m. - 6 p.m., and Saturday from 10 a.m. - 6 p.m.
