A few thoughts and observations on Valentine’s Days

-

Here we go again.

The annual mush fest known as Valentines Day is bearing down like an army of bed bugs arriving to bite and annoy and terrorize one and all. Who decided we needed this holiday anyway? It’s torture. Everyone is forced to be sweet and nice and hand out candy and make special dinner arrangements and get all kissy smoochy, lovey dovey, sweet and sappy.

If you think I am the only one who thinks Valentine’s Day is pretty much a useless holiday, let me introduce you to some famous and infamous folks who aren’t exactly in love with Valentine’s Day or the whole “love” operation in general.

“Without Valentine’s Day, February would be, well, January.” – Jim Gaffigan

“Before you marry a person you should make them use a computer with slow internet to see who they really are.” – Will Ferrell

“Oh, here’s an idea: Let’s make pictures of our internal organs and give them to other people we love on Valentine’s Day.

That’s not weird at all.” – Jimmy Fallon

“I love you no matter what you do, but do you have to do so much of it?” – Jean Illsley Clarke

“True love is usually the most inconvenient kind.” – Kiera Cass

“You can’t blame gravity for falling in love.” – Albert Einstein “Love is a fire. But whether it is going to warm your hearth or burn down your house, you can never tell.” – Joan Crawford

“Today is Valentine’s Day – or, as men like to call it, Extortion Day!” – Jay Leno

“Love is a lot like a toothache. It doesn’t show up on X-rays, but you know it’s there.” – George Burns

“Love is sharing your popcorn.” – Charles M. Schulz

“I love you and it’s getting worse.” – Joseph Morris

“Love is something sent from heaven to worry the hell out of you.” – Dolly Parton

“One is very crazy when in love.” – Sigmund Freud

“Love Valentine’s Day, love New Year’s Eve, love taking the SATs, just love high pressure situations and extreme expectations in general.” – B.J. Novak

“Money can’t buy love, but it improves your bargaining position.” – Christopher Marlowe

“If love is the answer, could you please rephrase the question?” – Lily Tomlin

Okay, those comments might be a little harsh. So let’s shift gears and ponder who really deserves some Valentine’s attention.

“You yourself, as much as anybody in the universe, deserve your love and affection.” – Buddha

“Dare to love yourself as if you were a rainbow with gold at both ends.” – Aberjhani

“If you have the ability to love, love yourself first.” – Charles Bukowski

“I’m single because I was born that way.” – Mae West

OPINION

(Jon Klusmire of Bishop will finally deliver a bit of mush, from none other than The Chairman of The Board, Mr. Frank Sinatra: “A simple ‘I love you’ means more than money.” How romantic.)
