We have several businesses in town owned by the same family. These businesses contribute an enormous amount of money to the community. It is because of those businesses that this community can afford all services we benefit from. They bought Sterling Heights when it went on the market. The county could have bought it to provide affordable housing they have talked about for many years but didn’t. The Schat family stepped in and purchased it for affordable housing. Sterling Heights was used for many years as senior housing without any major changes. The city Building (Department) steps in and starts dictating major improvements. It is understandable that after many years of marginal maintenance that one would expect some painting, roof repair, and other minor repairs. However the city stepped in and was looking for a major overhaul of the property. There apparently was pushback from the new owners.

This is a time when the city manager, building inspector, and the new owner should sit down and air out their differences and come to a mutually agreeable and rational solution that satisfies everyone’s concerns. Then the public can benefit from the outcome with some affordable housing. Apparently a similar problem has arisen in the remodel of the BofA building. It is time to stop letting egos get in the way of progress.
