Beauty Myths: Busted!

We’re here to put an end to all of the beauty rumors you’ve heard!

-

YOU CAN USE TOOTHPASTE TO GET RID OF ZITS

THE TRUTH: A dab of toothpaste has long been rumored to be an acne solution, thanks to its zit-drying ingredients. While it’s true that it can dry out your skin, that one perk isn’t worth all of the negative effects toothpaste can have! For one, your skin is a lot more sensitive than your teeth. Toothpaste can irritate your skin and cause rashes. It can also dry your skin out too much. Instead, stick to things that are intended for acne, like spot treatment!

YOU CAN SHRINK YOUR PORES

THE TRUTH:

The simple truth is that we cannot change the size of our pores. Any product claiming to be pore-shrinking is actually just minimizing the appearance of pores. The size of our pores is determined by our genetics. However, keeping your skin clean and wearing sunscreen are two great long-term ways to make your pores appear smaller!

SHAVING MAKES YOUR HAIR GROW BACK THICKER

THE TRUTH: Nope, shaving can’t change the thickness of your hair. We know what you’re thinking: After you shave your legs, the hair feels like it’s growing back thicker. Well, that’s because shaving changes the shape of your hair! When it grows back, it had a blunt tip, instead of its natural pointy tip. That bluntness makes the hair feel thicker!

THE PRICIER THE ITEM, THE BETTER IT’LL WORK

THE TRUTH: This isn’t always the case! In fact, sometimes pricey makeup and beauty products have the same ingredients as things you can find in the drug store. So why the crazy price tag? Well, when you buy a luxury item, you’re paying for the experience as much as the actual product. That means a fancy brand name, chic packaging and luxurious scents. While all of those things are nice, you don’t need them to have a great product that works for you!

YOU DON’T NEED SUNSCREEN IF YOU’RE WEARING FOUNDATION

THE TRUTH: You always need sunscreen!

Even if your foundation has SPF, the amount of foundation you put on your face is way less than the amount of sunscreen you need to keep your face protected. As a general rule, you should use a quarter-sized dollop of at least SPF 30 on your face. Even though your foundation covers your entire face, it doesn’t work to protect your skin from the UV rays. Only sunscreen can do that!

PUMPING YOUR MASCARA WAND CLEARS THE LUMPS

THE TRUTH: Pumping your wand pumps air into the tube, which adds bacteria that can actually harm your eyes! On top of that, pumping it causes the formula to dry out, which means you’’ll have to throw it out faster. Instead, twist the wand while it’s in the tube to get rid of extra product.

YOU SHOULDN’T USE MOISTURIZER IF YOU HAVE OILY SKIN

THE TRUTH: The simple explanation is that there’s a difference between being oily and being hydrated. Even if you have oily skin, your skin still needs moisturizer to be hydrated! In fact, being under-moisturized can cause skin to make more oil. Your best bet is to go for a lightweight moisturizer that’s made for oily skin!

GO WITH A FOUNDATION THAT MATCHES YOUR WRIST

THE TRUTH: Hold your wrist up to your makeup-free face and look in the mirror. Chances are that your wrist is probably a different shade than your face! To get the best foundation match, test out colors on your jawline. It’s the best spot to get the most accurate shade for your skin!
