CHSAA has announced the first RPI standings of the 2020 football season and the news is good for the Sterling Tigers.

The Tigers (2-0) currently posses the number one spot in all of 2A. After defeating Brush and Eaton, Sterling posses a win percentage of 1.000, and opponents win percentage of 1.000, and an opponents’ opponents win percentage of .417. That currently gives Sterling an RPI of .825000.

Sterling plays Platte Valley Friday night. The Broncos are currently third in the RPI standings. Should Sterling win, they’ll easily maintain the top spot. Should they lose, they likely wouldn’t fall too far considering the strength of opponent.

Elsewhere in Logan County, the Merino Rams are currently in a six-way tie for eighth place in the RPI. The Rams currently posses a win percentage of 1.000, and opponents win percentage of .000, and an opponents’ opponents win percentage of 1.000. That gives Merino an RPI ranking of .600000.

Merino faces off against Dayspring Christian on Saturday afternoon. Dayspring is 1-1 and sits at 30th in the RPI so a win likely wouldn’t move them up much, if at all. A loss, on the other hand, could send them tumbling quite a bit.

The Caliche Buffaloes, meanwhile, are in a seven-way tie for 20th in the RPI. The Buffs are currently 0-2 and possess a win percentage of .000, an opponents win percentage of 1.000, and an opponents’ opponents win percentage of .000 for an RPI of .400000. The Buffs play 0-2 Akron Friday night and a win could move them up.

In 6-man, the Fleming Wildcats and the Peetz Bulldogs are currently in a four-way tie for fifth place. Both Fleming and Peetz are 2-0 for a win percentage of 1.000, opponents win percentage of .500, and opponents’ opponents win percentage of .500. That gives both teams an RPI of .650000.

Fleming faced their toughest opponent of the season so far on Friday night in 2-0 Prairie. Prairie was tied for first in the RPI in the initial rankings so a win against the Mustangs would likely move them up close to the top spot.

The Bulldogs, meanwhile, were slated to face off against Briggsdale at home Friday evening. The Falcons were 1-1 and coming of f a last minute loss to Prairie on Monday. Briggsdale is the toughest challenge of the year so far for Peetz and a win would send a message across the state.

It’s hard to read too much into the RPI this early, but currently, four of the five Logan County teams are in prime position to succeed.
