The University of Northern Colorado women’s volleyball team came up with two crucial wins against Eastern Washington last week thanks in large par t to their defense. The back row led the way and no one in the back row was better than Sterling native Kyndall Feather. The Big Sky conference has now recognized Feather’s outstanding play last week.

Feather, a junior who graduated from Sterling High School, was named Big Sky Defensive Player of the Week. It’s the first time Feather has ever won the award.

The award was well deserved. In Sunday’s matchup against EW, Feather came up big with 20 digs in a four set victory for the Bears. The Bears out digged the Eagles 74-49 on the day and Feather also contributed 2 aces in the game.

The next day, Feather was just as excellent. UNC found themselves trailing 2 sets to 1 and down 20-11 in the fourth set. Feather set the of fense up nicely with 5 digs in that set alone and the Bears staged an epic five set comeback. Feather finished the night with 24 digs overall.

In her two games against the Eagles, the Sterling, Colorado native averaged 4.33 digs per set and helped UNC hold EWU to a .137 hitting percentage.

Feather comes from an athletic family. Her sister Jade helped lead Sterling High School to a state championship victory last year and is currently the starting libero for NJC. Her younger brothers are currently playing basketball for Fleming while her father is in his first year as the Fleming boys basketball head coach.

UNC is currently 3-1 on the season with the two wins against Eastern Washington and a series split against Montana State. The Bears return to play this Sunday with a home game against Por tland State. They will play PSU again the following day.
