Reviewing the week of NJC athletics

Women’s basketball, wrestling return

- By Hart Pisani Sports Writer

It was a busy week for NJC athletics and there’s plenty to recap. Let’s get to it.

Volleyball: 2 wins 2 losses

NJC hosted their own tournament this past weekend and it was a successful Friday with a less successful Saturday. The Plainswomen defeated Utah State Eastern 3-2 and Seward Community College 3-0 on Friday. Saturday saw NJC fall 3-2 to Iowa Western and 3-1 to Snow College. Snow and Iowa Western are two of the top teams in the country so there’s no shame in losing to them. NJC is now 5-2 on the season and will travel to Mccook for a tournament this weekend.

Women’s basketball: 1 win 2 losses

Due to a cancellation the week before, the NJC women’s basketball team had to wait a little longer to start their season. They were back in action last week, however, claiming victory over Lamar Community College on Saturday (75-68) while losing to Laramie County Community College on Tuesday (80-67) and Casper College on Thursday (78-39). Individual stats were not available for those games. The Plainswomen will be back in action on Wednesday at Central Community College-columbus. NJC is now 1-2 on the season.

Men’s basketball: 1 win 1 loss

It was a .500 week for the Plainsmen basketball team. NJC secured a home victor y over Laramie County Community College on Tuesday, 93-74. Dalton Knecht led the way with 27 points, 7 rebounds, and 7 assists. NJC followed that up with an 81-77 loss to Casper College on Thursday. Knecht led the way again, this time with 25 points and 6 rebounds. Recent Sterling High School grad Axel Henry had his best college game yet with 7 points and 4 rebounds. NJC plays again

Wednesday at Central Community College-columbus. The Plainsmen are 1-3 on the year.

Softball: 1 win 5 losses

It was a rough week for the NJC softball team to say the least. The Plainswomen lost four straight at Vernon College: 10-1 and 10-2 on Friday, and 9-5 and 11-2 on Saturday. NJC did secure a 12-7 victor y over Frank Phillips College on Sunday, their first win of the season. However, they lost to FPC later that day 11-8. The Plainswomen are now 1-5 this year and will return to action with a double header at Northwest Kansas Technical College.

Wrestling: Unknown

The NJC Wrestling team finally started their season with a duel at Powell, Wyoming. Results were not available for the duel.
