Fleming girls hoops places sixth at state tournament

Wildcats ended their season with a 16-9 record

Fleming girls basketball certainly took its lumps throughout the 2022-23 season, and the postseason proved to be no different.

Over the weekend, after playing their way into the Class 1A Great 8 the week before, the 11thseeded Wildcats placed fifth among a field of 32 teams. Three-seeded Briggsdale ended their run in the championship bracket in the quarterfinals by outmaneuvering the Wildcats on offense, winning 47-31. Briggsdale eventually won the whole thing with a 53-37 decision over top-seeded Mcclave in the championship game.

Their ride through the state tournament, however, didn’t end there.

That loss sent them to the consolation bracket, where they first faced off with No. 10 Kit Carson. The Wildcats battled up until the last second of the contest before stunning Kit Carson with a 3735 score to advance to one last game — the fifth-place matchup.

Fleming went head-tohead against No. 5 Stratton, only to fall in a defensive match that saw a 39-28 final score. With that final loss, and all the wins they collected to get there, the Wildcats ended their season with a 16-9 record.

Senior Kally Kirkwood ended her glittering high school career leading her team in every meaningful statistical category, as she averaged 11.1 points per game, 7.5 rebounds per game, three assists per game, 3.4 steals per game and 1.4 blocks per game.

Sterling’s Diaz places top 10 at Max Marr Invite

As spring sports begin, track athletes all across the state will start to strut their strengths. Sterling’s Dominick Diaz did just that on Friday at Berthoud’s Max Marr Invite.

In a two-mile field of 30 boys, Marr placed ninth overall after recording a run time of 10 minutes, 36.62 seconds. He dropped significant time from his seed time, which before the race sat at 11:10.
