Merino girls basketball stays on top

- By Alissa Noe

Another season, another strong Merino girls team.

Two games into the season the Merino girls basketball squad doesn’t seem to have missed a beat, just a few weeks after some of the players won another Class 1A volleyball state championship. Two games into the season, they haven’t suffered a loss.

The Rams opened their new slate with a 42-24 victory over Flatirons Academy, then turned around to beat down Simla by another large margin in the 52-33 decision.

They’ll next host Prairie on Thursday for a 5:30 p.m. start. The Mustangs will enter the contest with a 4-0 record.

Merino boys win one, lose one

Merino’s boys basketball squad entered its season running on a high when it defeated Flatirons Academy 61-42, but quickly felt the sting of defeat when Simla came to play.

After a hard-fought battle, the Cubs ran away with a 55-47 victory after maintaining control through the first three quarters. The Rams, all the while, were nipping at their heels, lagging just a few points behind before outplayed the Cubs, scoring 16 to their 14, in the fourth quarter.

The Rams will hit the hardwood again against Prairie on Thursday to take on a 2-2 Mustangs team.

Sterling girls hoops sees a major swing

Sterling girls basketball’s first game of the season wasn’t exactly kind to it, but the Tigers seemed to brush the tough loss off with grace.

Following a 64-13 beating from Strasburg, the Tigers immediately turned around to beat Eagle Ridge Academy with a 5031 score. As they continue down their schedule, they’ll look to leave that opening loss well in the rearview mirror.

Next up, the Tigers will head to Wellington on Tuesday night, with tip off slated for 6 p.m. The Eagles will enter the contest with an 0-2 record, having already lost to The Academy (65-36) and Fort Lupton (37-27).
