Caliche girls basketball enjoys strong start

- By Alissa Noe

Caliche girls basketball could hardly have asked for a hotter way to start its season. Four games in, the Buffaloes’ only loss has come by just six points.

Last week, they dotted the exclamation point on their 2023-24 debut with wins over Fleming and Haxtun, both of which ended in a battle. The Buffs first faced off with the Wildcats, utilizing an ironclad second quarter to propel them to a 43-39 victory, staving off any comeback attempts from Fleming all the while.

The 25-11 lead they built up at the half came in clutch when Fleming took control in the second half, outscoring the Buffs 28-18 before the contest reached its conclusion. The loss set Fleming back to a 1-1 record on the young season.

Caliche, meanwhile, enjoyed strong performances from senior Karsyn Huss (14 points), junior Ava Hernandez (10 points) and sophomore Hallie Lewis (nine points). Hernandez rounded out her game with seven rebounds, all defensive, two assists and two steals.

Junior Jordan Gerk, while only scoring two points, contributed in other ways. She took down seven rebounds, dished out an assist and notched three steals.

The Buffs continued their winning ways when they traveled to Haxtun the next day and mounted their own successful comeback. The Fightin’ Bulldogs began the contest with a 13-6 first quarter, and those 13 points helped them maintain a 2115 lead at the half. Following a tight third frame that saw Caliche take a slight 1110 scoring advantage, the Buffs exploded in the fourth quarter.

Their final 15-4 scoring spree carried them to a 41-35 victory over Haxtun to bring their overall record to 3-1, with their only loss coming at the hands of Prairie, which defeated them 42-36.

Next up, the Buffs will cross into Nebraska to take on Potter-dix, which has struggled so far with a 1-4 record. Tip-off is scheduled for 4 p.m. on Thursday.
