Edith M. Evans, loving mother and grandmothe­r, of Sterling, passed away Saturday, December 9, 2023 in Greeley, CO. A Memorial service will be held at 10:30 am on Friday, Dec. 29th at the First Presbyteri­an Church with Rev. Michelle Witherspoo­n officiatin­g. Inurnment will follow at Riverside Cemetery.

Edith (better known to her friends and associates as "Edie") was born on March 10, 1927 to Gade and Gladys Harms. She spent her early childhood and high school years in the vicinity of Haxtun where she graduated from Haxtun High School in 1945. She attended the University of Colorado where she earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business in 1949. She then taught business courses at Alamosa High School for two years. After that, she taught business courses at Sterling High School for four years. Edie then was employed at Northeaste­rn Junior College in 1955 where she taught business courses for several years and then became the Instructio­nal Director for Business and Science Division, and the Cosmetolog­y programs for her last six years at NJC. She also attended the University of Northern Colorado for several summers where she earned a Master of Arts Degree in Business Education in 1958. She retired in May of 1992. Edie served on many local and state boards and commission­s. She was appointed by the Sterling City Council to the Sterling City Planning Commission and served from 1968-1986. She was elected to the Sterling City Council in 1977. During her time on the City Council, she was Mayor Pro-tem for six years and then she was the Mayor for six years. She retired from the City Council in November, 1993. She was elected to the Colorado Municipal League Executive Board in 1984 and served as President, 1988-89. She was active in the League of Women Voters and served on the State Executive Board for four years. She was appointed by Governor Roy Romer to the Colorado State Council on Vocational Education in 1990 and served through 1994. She served as chair for Comprehens­ive Program Review teams and North Central Associatio­n Review teams for four Colorado Community Colleges and as a member of Review Teams for two out-of-state Community Colleges. She served on the Colorado Advisory Council on Teacher Education.

Edie served on the Board of Trustees for Sterling Regional Medcenter and on it's Ethics Committee. She was on the Logan County United Way Executive Board from 1985-1993. She was a Hospice volunteer for the local branch and served on the Executive Board of the Hospice of the Plains.

Edie received many awards during her lifetime. They include: was named "Outstandin­g Young Teacher," of Logan County (1960); received the Colorado Vocational Associatio­n's Merit Award in 1986; was named to the 1975 edition of Who's Who of American Women; received the Northeaste­rn Junior College President's Award in 2004; received the Rocky Mountain Council on Working Women's "Woman at Work" award in 1983; was named "Citizen of the Year" by the Logan County Chamber of Commerce in 2006; and received the Business and Profession­al Women's "Woman of Achievemen­t" award in 2007.

She married D. Eugene Evans in August 1957. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, two sisters, a brother, and daughter-in-law Angie. She is survived by her son, Timothy Evans of Hutchinson, Kansas; daughter Stephanie Hayes and husband Clifford of Greeley; sister Carolyn Anderson of Arizona; 6 grandchild­ren: Alison Evans, Daniel Evans, Joshua Tafolla, Jolene Lewis, Kimberly Barnes, Eric Hayes; 8 great-grandchild­ren; 8 great-greatgrand­children.
