Teams break into the rankings

Colorado Preps releases first polls for boys and girls basketball season

- By Alissa Noe

Colorado Preps released its first coaches and media poll for the basketball season, and a few familiar mascots made the cut in both the boys and the girls lists.

On the girls’ side, Merino topped out as the best team in the Class 2A poll, and Caliche earned enough votes to put it just outside of the top 10 at No. 13. In 1A, Fleming rose as high as No. 5.

On the boys’ side, Merino led the way in the 2A poll at No. 3, while Peetz teetered just on the outside of the 1A poll at No. 11.

Merino’s girls have yet to face any real test, as they’ve built up a 6-0 lead through the early weeks of their schedule. Sedgwick County came the closest of any opponent, and the Cougars still fell by an 11-point margin (50-39).

Caliche’s girls have been on a bit of a tear themselves, picking up five wins through six tries. Prairie, which is ranked No. 9 in the 1A poll, was the only team to get the better of the Buffaloes, and only by six points (42-36).

Fleming’s girls, meanwhile, have won five of six. Caliche took their lone loss by just a four-point margin (43-39).

Merino’s boys have proven themselves to be just as dominant as the girls, and further illuminated that fact in their only loss of the season. Simla, which rose to the very top of the 2A poll, defeated the Rams 55-47.

The Peetz boys (6-2) missed out on a top-10 mark thanks to two losses, but neither are anything to balk at. They dropped the first one by just three points to Nebraska’s Leyton (5552) before allowing Merino to get the better of them on Saturday (62-47).

All of the teams will now begin the conference meat of their schedule as they look to make the finest cuts.
