Caliche girls basketball back on track over Otis

- By Alissa Noe

The stretch that Caliche girls basketball has been experiencing lately has been tough, to say the least.

Prior to their Jan. 12 meeting with Sedgwick County, the Buffaloes had been enjoying a 6-1 record, but quickly watched that dominance fall away. Over the past couple of weeks, they’ve suffered losses at the hands of Class 2A’s second-ranked Sedgwick County and No. 1 Merino — according to the latest Coaches and Media rankings from Colorado Preps — as well as Wray.

On Monday, they set their record straight with a 4838 win over Otis thanks to a 10-point surge in the third quarter. They managed to successfully hold off the Bulldogs in the fourth quarter, when they finally started to fight back.

That contest saw junior Ava Hernandez and senior Karsyn Huss share the brunt of the offensive responsibility, as Hernandez netted 16 points and Huss backed her up with another 15. Hernandez added seven rebounds and three assists, but the most impressive statistic, perhaps, belonged to a brick wall named Ryann Svoboda.

The sophomore blocked six shots in just that one game.

The latest victory put the Buffaloes back on the map with a 7-4 record, but they’ll have to put in the extra effort if they hope to begin another win streak. They head next to No. 9 Akron on Friday afternoon.

Peetz holds steady at No. 5

Peetz boys basketball continued to stay dominant in its own right, having only lost one game to a Colorado team and one more to a squad out of Nebraska. Last week, the Bulldogs blasted Fleming with a 70-43 final to move to 9-2.

The rise throughout the program has continued an incredible trend for a team that only won six games out of 20 two years ago.

Last year, they finished with a 10-13 record, and are well on track to surpassing that mark.
