Fleming girls basketball drops the hammer on Peetz

- By Alissa Noe

A No. 5 ranking in the latest Coaches and Media Poll doesn’t seem to be sufficient enough for Fleming girls basketball. No, the Wildcats need to keep showcasing their depth against their opponents.

Last week, the Wildcats did just that when they hosted Peetz, and subsequently sent the Bulldogs packing with a 70-32 win. Four ladies hit double-digit scoring en route to the victory. Sophomore Brooke Schaefer led the charge with 13 points, followed closely by senior Madi Serrato (12 points), sophomore Ashley Bornhoft (11 points) and sophomore Ciana Lousberg (10 points). And, while nobody hit the double-double mark, Bornhoft came dangerously close by way of nine rebounds.

The Wildcats improved to 7-2 as they continue to trail behind No. 1 Mcclave (9-1 record), No. 2 Flatirons Academy (11-1), No. 3 Briggsdale (9-1) and No. 4 Stratton (8-2 record). The Wildcats will have a chance to further prove their stock later this week, when they hit the road to Class 2A’s top-ranked Merino on Friday and Briggsdale on Saturday. A win in either of those contests may just give them the juice they need to move up in the 1A standings.

Sterling girls basketball continues its slump

The first month of the basketball season was fairly kind to Sterling girls basketball, but 4A Patriot League play most certainly has not.

After collecting five wins through the first nine games of the season, the Tigers have since suffered setback after setback, further proving just how tough that league is. Over the last couple of weeks Sterling has counted losses to No. 4 University, No. 7 Resurrection Christian, Eaton — which garnered votes in this week’s 4A poll — and Berthoud.

None of the outcomes were especially close.

Sterling, now 5-8, will cross state lines on Thursday with the hopes of righting the ship against Scottsbluff. The Bearcats will enter the contest with a 9-7 record.
