Caliche boys pulls one over on Haxtun

- By Alissa Noe

Wins for Caliche boys basketball have been like rain in a drought. Though they don’t come often, it’s hard not to relish in them when they do.

On Friday, the Buffaloes picked up their fourth win of the season when they slipped past Haxtun 56-52, utilizing a strong fourth quarter to push them across the finish line. The Buffs took the reins from the very beginning, scoring 21 points in the first quarter alone, then built up a 31-23 lead by the end of the first half.

The Fightin’ Bulldogs lived up to their name, and battled back in the third quarter to tie things up at 39 going into the final eight minutes. Haxtun made the Buffaloes use everything left in the tank to pull out a victory, as Caliche finished the contest with 17 points and Haxtun only managed to sink another 13.

The Buffs, now 4-11, will begin the last gasp of the season at Idalia on Friday night.

Caliche girls win three straight

Unlike the boys, the Caliche girls have found success and setback through a series of streaks, but look to be on the up and up over the last week.

Since Jan. 30, the Buffs have downed Peetz, Haxtun, and Wiggins, but face an incredibly tough end to the regular season with three ranked teams on the horizon.

Caliche maintained complete control in its 68-30 victory over Peetz and leaned on the strong offensive presence of junior Ava Hernandez (25 points), senior Karsyn Huss (16 points) and sophomore Hallie Lewis (11 points) to surge the team to victory.

The Buffs’ 52-46 win over Haxtun came by way of a 21-point performance by Huss. Lewis (17 points), Hernandez (15 points) and Huss (13 points) once again coalesced to take down Wiggins with a 57-48 score.

The Buffs improved to 10-5, but will have to face Prairie, Class 1A’s No. 5 Idalia, 3A’s No. 8 Yuma and 1A’s No. 4 Briggsdale down the final stretch.
