Three stalwarts of Colorado’s Republican Party have endorsed Logan County Commissioner Jerry Sonnenberg in his run for Congress in the state’s 4th Congressional District.

On Thursday, former U.S. Senators Cory Gardner, Wayne Allard and Hank Brown all issued endorsements of Sonnenberg’s run. All three also have served at various times in the U.S. House of Representatives from the 4th CD.

The endorsements are huge because Sonnenberg, a former state senator and one-time Senate President Pro Tem, faces a crowd of opponents in the Republican Primary, including some former legislative colleagues.

Gardner called Sonnenberg “the conscience of conservatism” in the 4th District.

“He will be a passionate and dedicated warrior for our nation and our shared conservative values,” Gardner said. “As a leader, he understands the importance of a thriving urban corridor on the Front Range and how it bolsters the rural Eastern Plains.”

Allard talked about Sonnenberg’s character and pointed out his deep roots in agriculture.

“Sen. Sonnenberg has proven himself to be an advocate for his constituents with the character that CD4 expects,” Allard said. “He is well suited to represent the families and small businesses along the west part of the district as well as those that produce the food, fiber and energy in the rural areas.”

Sonnenberg said he was “honored and humbled” to have the support of the three former senators.

“Those three leaders have been mentors and role models for not only me, but for anyone that wanted to be a true leader,” he said. “They are wonderful examples of people that went to D.C. to get things solved rather than being sucked up into the swamp. I am so honored and humbled to have their support.”

Sonnenberg already has garnered a long list of endorsements from county commissioners across eastern Colorado as well as current and former state legislators, party leaders and clergy.
