Caliche’s Huss selected for CCGS All-star game

- By Alissa Noe

Karsyn Huss’ impact on the rebuilding of Caliche’s girls basketball team cannot be overstated. In just a few short years, she and her father, Dave, have turned a twowin team into a Class 2A regional tournament qualifier.

Karsyn’s talent on the hardwood was evident from the beginning, as she led the Buffaloes in a number of statistical categories every year of her high school career. At the conclusion of this winter sports season, during which she led the Buffaloes with 13.2 points per game, 4.8 rebounds per game, 3.7 assists per game and 2.8 steals per game, she’ll take home one more honor.

An invitation to the Colorado Coaches of Girls’ Sports all-state basketball games, which will take place at Grandview High School on March 17.

According to a statement sent by Dave Huss, “CCGS began sponsoring an All-state Basketball game in 1978 to provide girls a showcase for talent. Each senior athlete is nominated by coaches in her league, while coaches representing all the leagues make the final selection of 80. Players are chosen based on talent, dedication, team play and leadership.”

Karsyn Huss, naturally, also served as the lone representative from Caliche to earn an allconference nod in the LPAA. She was joined by Kya Piel, Makenna Sutter and Brooklyn Sutter of Merino.

Piel continued her athletic dominance with 15.6 points per game, 8.3 assists per game and 4.5 steals per game. Makenna Sutter followed her lead as a Swiss Army Knife, contributing 11.4 points per game, 6.9 rebounds per game and 4.1 steals per game. Brooklyn Sutter mostly focused on the scoring end, adding 10.4 points per game.

Merino ended its season as 2A’s undefeated state champion, and Caliche completed its run with a 10-11 record, and will return a strong player in Ava Hernandez.
