Retired ICE exec offers to be fill-in

Auroran would continue to run in GOP primary in 6th District to face Crow

A former immigration supervisor has stepped forward to run in the June 25 special election to fill Rep. Ken Buck’s seat through the end of the year.

John Fabbricatore already is campaigning to face incumbent Democrat Jason Crow in Colorado’s 6th Congressional District. In a statement issued Friday morning the Aurora Republican said he’s been encouraged to run as the “placeholder” representative in Colorado’s 4th District. Fabbricatore is the former Immigration and Customs Enforcement field office director for the region that covers both Colorado and Wyoming from 2020 to 2022 and worked for the agency for 19 years.

“In the coming days, I will be making calls to seek input from members of the 4th District committee about pursuing this nomination as a placeholder,” Fabbricatore said. “Should I have the honor of being selected as the 4th District special election candidate, I will continue to run as the Republican in the 6th District general election against … Jason Crow. This will allow the current primary race to continue as intended, giving the entire 4th District an opportunity to pick who will run in November and then be sworn in come January after I depart from a brief period of service.”

Colorado’s 6th Congressional District encompasses southeastern Denver and includes Englewood, Centennial, Littleton, and Aurora.

Fabbricatore’s offer could solve the thorny the special election problem for the Republicans in the 4th District. None of the 11 primary candidates showed any interest in being the GOP nominee for the special election, despite the fact it would give that person something of an incumbent’s advantage in the general election, but only if they also

earned the nomination in the primary. Both elections are being held on the same day.

So far no one has suggested who the Democrats may put forward as a special election candidate. Ike Mccorkle, one of five Dems in the primary race, is generally regarded as the favorite to earn the Democratic nomination. Mccorkle ran for the 4th District seat in 2020 and 2022, losing both times to Buck in landslides. Colorado Democrats announced Friday morning they will hold a special nominating convention for the special election on April 1. The convention, which will have no effect on the primary election June 25, will be held via Zoom and streamed online for the public to view.
