Peetz baseball gets a win on the board

- By Alissa Noe

Nothing has come easy for Peetz baseball thus far this year, making every win feel like a breakthrough.

Last Friday, they felt one such sigh of relief at Prairie, where they tapped into one last burst of energy to beat the Mustangs with a 7-5 finish. The Bulldogs began and ended the game with a strong showing at the plate.

Peetz opened the contest with two runs in the top of the first inning, but couldn’t fully contain the Mustangs in the bottom of that same inning as Prairie sent one runner across home plate. Prairie then took the lead in the bottom of the third thanks to three additional runs, before the Bulldogs were able to tie things back up again at 4-4 in the top of the fifth.

When Prairie claimed a 5-4 lead heading into the seventh, the Bulldogs went into overdrive, netting three more runs before blanking the Mustangs in the final inning.

Sophomore Logan Vallier recorded the only two RBIS for the Bulldogs, as senior Chance Segelke (three hits), senior Noah Naegele (two hits) and sophomore Patrick Moreno (one hit) took charge at the plate. Naegele, Segelke and sophomore Rhyder Bayne scored two runs apiece.

Bayne’s strongest performance, however, came from the mound, where he struck out 13 batters, walked just two and gave up just four earned runs. The Bulldogs will return to action on Thursday at Merino.

Peetz girls shine at Yuma Invite

In the 56th Annual Yuma Bill Kalb Invitational, one that welcomed a large number of competitors, the Peetz girls track and field athletes stood out.

Freshman Ella Pejsa won the bronze in the 100-meter dash (13.38 seconds), as senior Suvaun Cook claimed seventh in the 400 (1 minute, 9.82 seconds). Cook then mastered with a silver in the long jump, flinging herself 14 feet, 5.75 inches.

The 800 sprint medley relay quartet finished middle of the pack, also at seventh, with a time of 2:07.66. On the boys’ side, Junior Lyle Schumacher led the way with seventh in the 1,600 (5:41.53) as the 4×200 relay team secured the last top-10 spot for the Bulldogs at eighth (1:43.82).
