Caliche baseball hits a rough patch

- By Alissa Noe

As the old saying goes, “When it rains, it pours.” But sometimes there’s a break in the clouds to offer sunshine and warmth.

Even in the middle of a downturn for Caliche baseball dating back to March 28, the Buffaloes have experienced a couple of reprieves. During that time frame, they’ve lost six and won two. A string of setbacks began with a 7-2 loss to Wray, then snowballed into three straight doubledigit losses to Yuma and Merino.

They let out a deep sigh of relief with an 18-8 victory over Briggsdale on April 8. The Buffaloes let a sevenrun first inning propel them to victory, never allowing the Falcons to take the lead. The Caliche batsmen accounted for 10 of the runs they scored, with senior Orran Adolf collecting a game-high four RBIS.

Sophomore Zach Yost added two of his own, followed by one apiece from freshman Avery Bell, senior Ayden Ring, junior Zander Yost and junior Clinton Rockwell. Adolf led the majority of the effort from the mound, slinging four innings while racking up 10 strikeouts, two walks and five earned runs.

The Buffaloes followed that game with back-toback losses to Akron, which saw scores of 14-4 and 14-1.

Weldon Valley, on Monday, fell victim to the hot bats that have come in spurts throughout the season. The Buffaloes only needed 2.5 innings to secure a 25-4 victory, thanks in large part to the gargantuan 22 runs they scored in the bottom of the first. Senior pitcher Andrew Smith struck out six through the three times that Weldon Valley’s offense took the field and only gave up three hits.

Zach Yost wowed with six RBIS, with Adolf (three RBIS), senior Sam Lange (two RBIS) and Zander Yost (two RBIS) also doing their share in the big win.

Caliche, now 5-9, looked to jump off of Monday’s victory into a winning streak when it hit the road to Holyoke on Tuesday afternoon. It will head to Prairie next for a doubleheader on Friday.
