Sterling soccer picks up two more wins

- By Alissa Noe

While wins haven’t always come easy for Sterling girls soccer this year, the Tigers seem to have a penchant for earning them in pairs.

The first such breakthrough came at the end of March, when they staved off a valiant comeback effort from Fort Lupton to win 5-4, then turned right around to blank Wellington 3-0. They followed those efforts with back-toback losses to Timnath and Berthoud, but recently reversed their fortunes once again.

On April 8, they hosted their fellow felines when Estes Park stalked into town, then sent the Bobcats packing with a 4-1 victory. Sophomore Taylor Tonche outscored the entire Bobcat roster with two goals of her own, as freshman Kylie Mildenberger and junior Lydia Boxberger got in on the scoring action themselves.

Junior Morgan Lambert aided the offense from the other side of the ball with nine steals. The Sterling defense helped out junior keeper Racquel Lopez greatly, only allowing her to make five saves. Estes Park keeper April Martinez, by contrast, had to make 12 saves on top of the four goals that passed her by.

That initial victory broke toward a second one three days later, this time at Valley. The Tigers leaned on an exceptional performance from Lopez in the goal box, with their offense battering the Vikings left and right.

In this contest, Lopez stopped seven shots on goal, all while Valley keeper Hailey Davis faced 12, making 10 saves in the process. Boxberger and junior Cedi ball distributed the scoring responsibility between themselves, and Mildenberger and sophomore Haylee Werth contributed assists to the cause.

The Tigers improved to 4-6 prior to their game at Liberty Common, for which a score had not been reported to Maxpreps as of Wednesday morning. They’ll take the pitch just four more times during the regular season, which ends on April 30, starting with a home game against Weld Central on Thursday at 4 p.m.
