ROANOKE - Marvin R. Braker, 80, of Roanoke, IL, passed away on Thursday, March 14, 2024, at the Apostolic Christian Home of Roanoke.

Marvin was born on April 10, 1943, in Liberal, MO, to Ben S. and Clara (Meiss) Braker. He married Michaleen Styner on December 26, 1965, in Joplin, MO, and she survives.

Also surviving are his children, Kevin (Janice) Braker, Karel (Nate) Hoffman and Michelle (Michael) Murphy; four brothers, Donald (Eileen) Braker, Jim (Marge) Braker, Glen (Audrey) Braker and Morris Braker; three sisters, Lois Phipps, Betty (Joe) Vaughan and Jane Hilton; sister-in-law, Martha Braker; nine grandchild­ren, Jon Braker, Jake Braker, Kelly Braker, Nick (Natalie) Hoffman, Kayla Hoffman, Austin Murphy, Brandon Murphy, Tyler Murphy and Peighton Murphy; and two great-grandchild­ren, Marvin Jay and T.J.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Harland Braker. Marvin owned and operated the local Ace Hardware store in Roanoke from 1979 to the early 2000s. He was known as a “handyman” and was always happy and helpful assisting others with their basic maintenanc­e needs. He retired as maintenanc­e man for Apostolic Christian LifePoints (Home for the Handicappe­d) in Morton.

Marvin was active in every community that he lived in. His gentle spirit and kind heart were evident in his desire to serve others. He volunteere­d on the local fire department and served as Chief while living in Indiana. He volunteere­d on the Roanoke Ambulance squad for over 30 years, serving as its chief for 20 of those year. He was also Santa Claus for many years, bringing smile and joy to children during the holidays.

He was a member of the Roanoke Apostolic Christian Church, where he had served as Sunday School teacher for many years.

Funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, March 18, 2024, at the Roanoke Apostolic Christian Church. Church ministers will officiate. Visitation will be from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday at Knapp-Johnson-Harris Funeral Home in Roanoke, and from 9 to 9:45 a.m. Monday, prior to the services at the church. Burial will follow at Roanoke Apostolic Christian Cemetery in Roanoke, IL.
