Historic Handworkes

- Deborah Fasano

For over 90 years, my grandmother always placed the holy family under her Christmas tree surrounded by wisps of 1940 lead tinsel icicles that sparkled from the light of the Christmas tree lights, like myriad stars in the night sky. After placing the holy family in honor, it was not the wise men, the angels or the drummer boy who came next, but the shepherds and their flock.

My grandmother believed that these humble men chosen by God to receive the message and herald the holy birth would serve to identify the epitome of the good shepherd, that Christ would become the true shepherd, our protector, our defense, our provider, the Messiah.

My grandmother believed that the good shepherd is there for each of us and for all the wandering sheep that return, to be gathered in the shepherd’s arms.

My ornament is dedicated to my beloved grandmother, Anna M. Fasano (Jan. 6, 1913-Jan. 1, 2017).
