First Annual Family Fun Day at the Mount Jewett Community Park

- By Theresa Auriemmo

Residents gathered at the Mount Jewett Community Park for the first annual Mount Jewett Family Fun Day to play games and eat food provided by the MJHHC (Mount Jewett Hilltop Heritage Coalition).

MJHHC member, Jason Hughes said it was wonderful to see more than twenty children running and laughing as they played Wiffle Ball and shot everyone with their water guns. “And I mean everyone. Thank you, parents,” Hughes said.

Hughes gave a special thanks to the Sports Boosters for giving the use of the concession stand and said it was perfect for setting up food and grilling hot dogs for Sunday’s event. He also gave thanks for the tremendous efforts of all volunteers.

“We laughed, we played, we learned, and it can only grow and improve from here for next year,” Hughes said.

Marilyn Compton, who is the MJHHC Secretary, said she was very happy with the turnout for the Family Fun Day. She stated that the kids had a great time playing with squirt guns and playing Wiffle Ball and hopes next year will bring out a lot more people.

“I love Mount Jewett. It is a great place to live,” Compton said.

MJHHC Board President, Kelly Barr Hughes said it was an amazing first event for the Mount Jewett Family Fun Days. She stated there was a great turnout from the community, the local businesses, and local clubs. Hughes said they had a great game of Wiffle Ball amongst all ages, free lunches were handed out that were prepared by MJHHC volunteers, which she acknowledged and thanked.

“I’m looking forward to doing this event in 2023, maybe twice. Thank you for all the help and support,” Hughes said.

Another member of the MJHHC, Robin Blankenship, thanked the coalition with a spe

cial thank you to Jason and Kelly Hughes. She stated that it was a lot of fun for the kids and adults.

“I can't wait for the next one,” Blankenship said.

An attendee, Jennifer Oknefski, commented on the event. She said it was a lot of fun and it was a great event to have for the community.

Angela Cornelius attended the event and said it is always good to see kids playing at the ballpark. Cornelius stated that Mount Jewett is lucky to have such a nice space to gather in the community and is looking forward to future park events.

Cornelius stated that the park revitalization efforts have made the park look nice, especially with the newly paved parking lot.

MJHHC Vice-president, Francis Auriemmo said it was a successful event with roughly forty adults and children attending.

“They appeared to have a good time. Hopefully, next year will bring in a larger attendance,” Auriemmo said.
