Build-a-groundhog with a Magical Star

- By Theresa Auriemmo

The Mount Jewett Memorial Library held a free event for children to "Build-a-groundhog" that came with its very own Birth Certificate.

On Wednesday, the back room of the library was packed with participants who were provided a groundhog to stuff and give a name.

Volunteer Jason Hughes, entertained the children with the Rainbow Wish Star Ceremony after the stuffing was inserted into the plush groundhog. A star was given to each child and then they were instructed to hold their star in the air and wave it back and forth to make it "magical". Hughes then asked them to close their eyes and think of their wish, kiss the star, and rub it on their heart to give their pal (groundhog) lots of love.

The children were then instructed to rub the star on their heads to make their pal super smart like them.

Next, the children put the star on their eyes so their new pal can see them when they give it a big hug.

Finally, they were asked to rub the star on their ears to their pal can hear them when they talk to it.

The children kissed the star one more time and inserted the star into the back of their new pal.

The children were given Birth Certificates for their groundhogs and were asked to give them a name.

"It was a great turnout! The parents and children enjoyed making their groundhogs and naming them," Volunteer Robin Blankenship commented.

She also stated that they were not only making their groundhogs, but they were learning about Groundhog Day.

Before the attendees left, there was one door prize to be won. By choosing the number closest to Library Director Kelly Barr Hughe's choice, Grace Millet won the door prize.
