Terrors among 48 left in PIAA playoffs

- By Bob Parana

District champ Otto-eldred is the lone District 9 team still alive for a PIAA basketball championship. The Terrors advanced to Tuesday's Class 2A semifinal with a 42-40 win on Saturday over D10 champ Erie First Christian (16-11) at Pennwest Clarion's Tippin Gymnasium.

Next for 25-2, Otto is District 7 (WPIAL) champ Aliquippa on Tuesday at Pennwest (7 p.m.). The Quips upped their mark to 23-6 with a 67-56 victory over last year's Class A champ Bishop Canevin (22-7), which finished fourth in D7.

The district-winning Class A Lady Terrors season ended on Saturday at Pennwest when they were beaten by D5 champ Berlin Brothersvalley (23-5), 40-39 in the quarterfinals. Heading into Saturday's games, the Otto teams were the only D9 teams still playing.

Berlin Brothersvalley is among the four schools with both its teams left. On Friday, the Class A D5 champ Mountaineers (25-2) beat D1 runner-up Philmont Christian (22-10), 67-42. Tonight, the Berlin boys face District 3 winner Linville Hill (24-0), one of the two unbeatens left. The other is the 29-0 Cedar Cliff girls – the District 6 champs.

The Colts face WPIAL third-place Norwin (24-4) tonight at Altoona HS (7 p.m.).

Other schools with both its teams remaining include Union Area, Cathedral Prep, and Archbishop Wood.

The Archbishop Wood (4A) and Cardinal O'hara (5A) girls are both looking to three-peat. Seeking a second-straight title on the boy's side are Neuman Goretti (4A), Imhotep (5A), and Roman Catholic (6A).

The WPIAL has the most participants, with eight girls and five boys' squads remaining. Other schools by District include 12 (10), 3 (6), 2 (5), 6 (4), 10 (2), 1 (2), 5 (2), 9 (1), 4 (1), 8(1), and 11 (1).

On Thursday, the three-day championship games get underway at the Giant Center in Hershey when the girls' Class 2 and 3A and boys' Class A and 4A titles are decided. Next, the girls' Class A and 6A and boys' Class 2 and 5A championships will be played on Friday. Finally, the girls' Class 4 and 5A and boys' Class 3 and 6A championship games are on Saturday.
