Late Innings rally lifts Brockway over Kane

- Keith Reigel Staff Writer

Brockway - The Kane Lady Wolves Softball Team opened their season Tuesday when they traveled to Brockway to take on the Lady Rovers. Brockway mounted a late innings rally to pick up the win 15-11. The game started out maybe a little better than expected as both teams only sent four batters to the plate. Kate Parana got Kane's first hit of the year but was left stranded on first. Unusual only as it was the first game of the year for Kane and the second for Brockway. With the horrible weather conditions the pitchers sometimes take a while to get their rhythm. The second inning was similar to the first as Cadence Carlson-maybury singled and was left there. Brockway got on the scoreboard first in the bottom of the second as they sent six batters to the plate and scored a run. Sara Ely led off the third with a walk and came home to score Kane's first run on a triple by Maya Smith. Smith was brought home when Alexa Olmstead singled. Brockway tacked two more on in the bottom of the third to take a 3-2 lead into the fourth inning. The fourth was huge for Kane as they sent eight batters to the plate and with a few walks mixed in with a pair of singles the bases were loaded for Smith who hit a shot in the gap that rolled all the way to the fence while Smith was able to round the bases for an inside the park grand slam to give Kane a 7-3 lead. Brockway responded in there half of the fourth with two runs of their own and trailed now 7-5. Addison Lantz walked to start then Brockway got the next two outs before Hailee Sheaffer hit a triple to bring Lantz home for the eighth run of the game. The bottom of the fifth was a big one for the home team as they sent nine batters to the plate and with the aid of a few walks they were able to capitalize on to score five runs and take a 10-8 lead. Leah Tigani led off the sixth with a triple and was brought home on a double from Smith cutting the Lady Rovers lead to one.

Smith would not advance as the next three batters went down in order. The bottom of the sixth the Lady Rovers again sent nine batters to the plate and five came home to score giving them a comfortable 15-9 lead into the seventh inning. Kane looked like they had something going as the first two batters got on base and then the third walked we all thought but was called out I believe because she did not report as a pinch hitter. So what would have been the bases loaded and no one out with the top of the order coming up now became first and second with one out. The next batter was struck out before Tigani hit her second triple of the game but Smith was intentionally walked and they were able to get the last out to distinguish the fire and come away with a very hard fought victory.

Leading the way on offense was Smith going 3-4 with a home run, two triples, two runs scored and six runs batted in.

Tigani was 3-5 with two triples, two runs scored and three runs batted in

Alexa Olmstead was 1-4 with a single and one run batted in

Cadence CarlsonMaybury 3-4 with three singles and two runs scored

Sarah Ely scored two runs

Leah Tigani was the losing pitcher with 4 innings pitched, 4 hits, 8 runs/8 earned runs, 8 walks and 4 strikeouts

Addison Lantz had 2 innings pitched, 1 hit, 7 runs/6 earned runs, 6 walks and 2 strikeouts

Kane will return to action Tuesday, March 28 they they host Elk County Catholic at Szymanski Field.
