Kane suffers heartbreaking loss to Sheffield

- Keith Reigel Staff Writer

SHEFFIELD - The Kane Wolves boys basketball team lost a heartbreaker 46-43 to host Sheffield in their Holiday Tournament December 27 & 28.

Kane was coming off maybe one of their

best team effort games of the season and built an early eight point lead after one quarter and took that same lead into halftime but the wolverines stuck to their game plan of limiting the touches for the wolves and it paid off in the end as the host came away with

a very hard fought victory.

Dane Anderson got Kane off to a good start again as he hit two 3-pointers and finished with 10 points in the first quarter to help the wolves jump out early. The second quarter was a battle of the defenses as both teams only tallied four points in what was becoming a very methodical game that limited each to very few shots at the bucket.

The third quarter the momentum started to shift a little to the wolverines as point guard Leihden Wotorson started finding his range and using his quickness to either drive by the wolves defense for a shot or a good find of a teammate

as he poured in 10 points, but the wolves still took a slim six point lead into the final period.

The final period was a tough one as both teams started playing more aggressive defense and it worked out for the better for the Wolverines as they hit some big free throws down the stretch to preserve the win. Probably the biggest play of the game came with just a little over three minutes left in the game and Kane clinging onto a two point lead. The Wolves were called for a foul sending Sheffield to the line, but, that wasn't the bad part a technical foul was called on Kane so now it was a two shot foul, two foul

shots for the technical and the wolverines got the ball out of bounds. Allen Eaton calmly stepped to the line and sank all four free throws to give sheffield the lead for the first time in the game. This played right into the wolverines hands who had been patient the entire game and they were able to pass the ball around and keep kane searching for answers. Brock Wensel sunk a big shot late to cut the lead to one but Wotorson hit two big free throws with under 6 seconds left in the game to put a lot of pressure on the wolves. Kane was able to move

the ball down court in time but a 3-point shot at the buzzer came out and Sheffield came away with the championship.

The boys return to action Wednesday, January 3, 2024 when they travel to Sheffield. The Junior Varsity game is scheduled for 6 p.m. with the Varsity to follow.
