Boys get win over Sheffield

- By Keith Reigel

SHEFFIELD - The Kane boys basketball team got sweet revenge on Sheffield Wednesday, January 3 as they avenged the tournament finals loss with a resounding 61-43 victory.

The win was a bitter sweet one as Sheffield got a come from behind win at their Holiday Tournament last week over the wolves by three points. So to get this win was a big lift for the team and it gives them some much needed confidence moving forward.

The first quarter was played pretty much even with the wolves taking a slight five point lead. Two senior leaders Dane Anderson and Sam Lundeen led the way with Anderson pouring in eight points and Lundeen chipping in with six. The second quarter belonged to kane as they forced a few turnovers and got some big shots from the bench players as they scored eight to help with the 20 point second quarter and they limited the wolverines to just eight to take a 17 point lead into the half. A big key in the half was the wolves held sheffield's point guard Wotorson scoreless.

The second half was played pretty much even but kane did limit sheffield to just eight points in the third to increase their lead to 22 points going into the final period. The reserves again came in and played very well to keep the pressure on the wolverines to foul and put the wolves on the line where they were able to put points on the board with no time taken off the clock. The defense was the big key again as they limited Wotorson to just one field goal and two free throws and four points when he scored 21 points in the second half in the tournament and finished the game with 26 points to carry the wolverines to the tournament championship.

They had several young players with little varsity experience step up and hit big shots and played great team defense. Kane put eight players in the scorebook led by Dane Anderson who finished with 20 points and was named D9/D10 Player of the Game. He was followed by Sam Lundeen who chipped in with 14 points.

The junior varsity game was won by Kane 54-35 as Talon Sheaffer led Kane with 12 points. Tysin Boschert followed with nine points and he had several blocks and rebounds to limit the wolverines second chance opportunities. Preston Darr and Isaiah Smith tallied eight apiece with Eric Novosel adding seven, Nate Mccormack six and Ben Wilson chipped in with a pair of buckets.

“We knew coming in what we need to do so we needed to see how we would respond to adversity. The kids played extremely well today. I don't think I subbed properly in earlier games so I needed to see how they would blend into the flow of the game. We have kids on the bench who are capable I just need to see how each can blend in with the rest of the team,” said Coach Cory Darr.

The boys return to action Friday, January 5 when they travel to Ridgway. Junior Varsity is scheduled to start at 6 p.m. with the Varsity to follow.
