Big Innings lift Bradford over Kane

- By Keith Reigel Staff Writer

KANE - The Kane Lady Wolves and the Bradford Lady Owls found themselves in a wild game Monday night at Szymanski Field in Kane and in the end the Lady Owls hung on for a 20-16 win.

The Owls looked like they were going to come up big in the first as Kane pitcher Leah Tigani struggled to find the strike zone as the visitors sent seven batters to the plate and they got three free passes on hit batsman. Tigani was able to put out the fire with some great pitches and limited Bradford to just one run in the inning. Kane responded in their half of the first by putting their first four batters on base with the top three coming home to score on some clutch hitting by Maya Smith and Elizabeth Yasurek to take a 3-1 lead after one.

The Wolves tacked three more on in the bottom of the second while limiting the Owls to just one to lead 6-2

after two innings.

The third proved to be a big inning as the Owls sent 12 batters to the plate with a few walks mixed in with some clutch hitting brought six runs home and held Kane to one to now lead 8-7 after three innings. Kane knew now they were in for a battle the rest of the way as each team got some great at bats from the bottom half of the lineup.

Bradford added two more in their half of the fourth and Kane responded with three to tie the game at 10.

The next two innings proved huge for the Owls as they sent 11 batters to the plate in the fifth and eight in the sixth and were able to bring home 10 big runs and held Kane to one to jump out to a 2011 lead going into the last inning.

Kane came up big on defense as they held the Owls scoreless for the first time in the game but a glimmer of hope was left for the Lady Wolves. The Wolves were able to send nine batters to the plate

and were able to bring five home but came up a little short as relief pitcher Daisy Greene came in to strike out three of the next four batters to preserve the hard fought win.

Kane returns to action today when they travel to St. Marys to take on Elk County Catholic at Benzinger Park. Game is scheduled to start at 4:15 p.m.
