- By Andy Mckowan Staff Writer

KANE—ON May 2, people will gather across Kane for a day of organized prayer. The National Day of Prayer (NDP) exists to mobilize unified public prayer for America and has been held for over 70 years.

In Kane, ceremonies will be held throughout the day at locations across Kane, each with different speakers and emphasis on a specific cause.

NDP in Kane will commence at 9 a.m. at Memorial Point at Evergreen Park. Prayers will focus on the military and first responders. Kane’s Mayor, Brandy Schimp, will be among the speakers. The point is located at the intersections of Birch St., Chestnut St. and South Fraley St. in Kane.

NDP continues with a prayer lunch at 12 noon at St. Callistus Catholic Church’s Parish Hall. The emphasis will be on nonprofits, businesses, Lutheran Home at Kane, and UPMC Kane Hospital. The lunch will feature a performance by the Kane Guitar Choir. St. Callistus is located at 342 Chase St. in Kane.

The next location

will be the Grace Bible Church near Kane High School at 3:30 p.m. Those prayers will focus on schools. The church is located at 353 E. Hemlock Ave. in Kane.

NDC will conclude with the final session at 7 p.m. at the Kane Community Methodist Church (KCMC). Those prayers will be focused on churches, the nation, and the national crisis of addiction. Donations of hot dogs (packs of 8-10) will be taken for the Kane Area Food Pantry during this session as well. KCMC is located at 112 Greeves St. in Kane.

Throughout the entire day, St. John’s Episcopal Church will be open for personal, contemplative prayer. Their address is 427 Chase St. in Kane.

The National Day of Prayer tradition predates the founding of the United States of America, evidenced by the Continental Congress’ proclamation in 1775 setting aside a day of prayer. In 1952, Congress established an annual day of prayer and, in 1988, that law was amended, designating the National Day of Prayer as the first Thursday in May.
