Deacon Dave delivers another truckload to Community Center for “Caring 4 Kane” food giveaway
KANE—ON May 9, Deacon Dave Galvin once again delivered a truckload of food to Kane, a tradition he has maintained for the last several years. This most recent visit was inspired by the outpouring of community spirit seen at the annual KARE for Kane community volunteer day.
Galvin has been driving deliveries to the Kane Area Community Center several times a year from his station in Charles Town, WV at St. James the Greater Catholic Church. Around 20 years ago, the church started a trucking company called Simon of Cyrene Trucking. In addition to the food deliveries, they help deliver furniture, firewood, and clothing. They make deliveries all over but Kane holds a special place for Galvin because he grew up and graduated high school in Kane.
“It’s really easy for me to love Kane, so to be able to love people back in Kane, it’s really a gift.” said Galvin.
With the help of Michelle Palmer and the rest of the staff and volunteers at the Community Center, they gave away 100 boxes of food on Thursday and served around 260 people. The boxes held real, and for the most part, local food. Fresh baked bread from Pepe’s Pizzeria, Swedish Korv sausage from Bell’s Meats, pork chops from the butcher at Savea-lot, and milk and butter from Tops. They brought hydroponic lettuce and organic farm fresh eggs from a West Virginia farmer, and potatoes from Ernest Mast, a farmer in Pennsylvania.
