Brooks reopens recruitment after Lady Vols fire Harper

- Cora Hall

Lady Vols basketball commit Nyla Brooks has reopened her recruitment after Kellie Harper was fired Monday.

The 2025 five-star committed to Tennessee on her unofficial visit in November 2022. Brooks made the announcement Tuesday on X, formerly known as Twitter, and said she hasn’t ruled out the Lady Vols.

“After thoughtful consideration and discussions with my family, I want to express my gratitude to the Lady Vols nation for considering me for their team,” Brooks wrote in the post. “Being considered by such a prestigious program is an honor and I thank God for that. However, I’ve decided to keep my options open given recent events ... I am reopening my recruitment. While I haven’t ruled out attending Tennessee as a student-athlete, I feel it’s important to explore other opportunities for my future.

“I appreciate the support of the coaching staff and everyone involved with Lady Vols nation. Hopefully, I’ll have the chance to visit Knoxville officially in the future. Excited for what lies ahead.”

Brooks’ announcement follows Finley Chastain, Tennessee’s other unsigned high school commit, reopening her recruitment Monday. Chastain didn’t close the door on the Lady Vols, either.

Brooks, a 6-foot-2 wing, has shot up the rankings in the 2025 class since her commitment. She’s ranked No. 16 in ESPN’s rankings and is coming off winning Bishop Ireton’s first-ever state championship. Brooks led the Cardinals with 17 points in the title game. Brooks averaged 19.8 points, 6.1 rebounds, 1.2 assists and one steal per game as a junior this season.

Brooks also recently attended twotime WNBA champion Breanna Stewart’s camp “Stewie30” camp, which included the top prospects in the country.

After Harper was fired Monday, Brooks posted about the staff on social media. She formed strong relationships with the entire staff, and Tennessee is her dream school.
